Chest Freezer Buyer’s Guide

Frigidaire Chest Freezer

If you purchase food in bulk, or you depend a lot on frozen foods for your family, you should consider buying a chest freezer. They can hold a lot of food and for a long time. They are a great commercial investment as well for people who are in the food business because they can purchase in bulk, get discounts as well as save time.

Chest freezers are usually set up in the basement or garage, not in the kitchen, so when you go shopping, you will be looking more at functionality than décor.

When going shopping for a chest freezer, consider the following:

  1. Space: This may not be such a critical aspect in the home because the freezer will sit in the basement or garage, but it is relevant if you are buying a chest freezer for commercial purposes. Measure the space you plan to put it and go shopping with the measurement. That space should not be close to an open heat source – this will shorten the lifespan of your freezer considerably.
  2. Volume: How much can the chest freezer hold? The whole point of a freezer is so that you can buy food in bulk, so it needs to be able to hold a lot of food that would otherwise not fit in a regular fridge freezer. If you require a smaller freezer then you may consider an Upright Freezer or a Fridge Freezer.
  3. Compartments: Older models of chest freezers didn’t have compartments, so organizing them was difficult. Today though, you can get them with compartments so that you keep different foods in different places. You don’t want, for instance, your meats and your ice-cream together. Make sure that whatever you choose has compartments.
  4. De-frost: With defrosting, you have to decide whether you want manual or automatic defrost chest freezer. A manual defrost is usually better for foods – it doesn’t dry out the air in the freezer and leave foods dry. An automatic defrost, which is controlled by a defrost cycle, will dry out the air and leave your foods dehydrated (you’ll find that ice cream has a skin after an automatic defrost – its because some moisture was drawn out of it). If food stays for a long time in a chest freezer that has an automatic defrost, it will get dryer and dryer. The advantage, though, is that you don’t have to remember to defrost or take time doing it. The halfway alternative between these 2 is a freezer that has an alarm that tells you when its time to defrost.
  5. Additional features: For a little more money, you can get a chest freezer that has an ice water dispenser as well as an ice maker. Some will come with snack holders and wine racks, but you need to consider the value of these additional features before you pay more for them. If you’re going to use them, then they are worth the extra amount spent. If you’re not going to use them, they will have cost you money, and they will be taking up space in your chest freezer that you could have used to keep something else.

Do not buy a freezer that comes without a warranty. Only buy from reputable manufacturers and legitimate dealers like Amazon because you’ll be investing quite a bit of money and you need to be sure that you have found the best deal for your Chest Freezer.
